Beginning Your Job Search
Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 10:00AM “So, what do you plan on doing now, with your degree?”
“Do you have a job yet?”
“Have you interviewed anywhere?”
“Did you hear that so-and-so has a job at…?”
You’re hearing this a lot right now from everyone. It seems your four years of college passed pretty quickly. Now is your chance to make use of all that money and time you spent in college and get a job. But which job?
You’ve got options: Do you go after a job that has great pay and amazing benefits (but where you work 12 hours a day), or do you follow your passions and take a low paying job with no benefits? Do you intern for a while to get some experience, or do you wait on a job you want to keep for the rest of your life?
It’s an easier choice when you realize that your first job is not the be-all, end-all of your future in the working world. Your first job is really just the second part of your education, more like fieldwork. It's where you'll get on-the-job training and acquire the skills and information you'll need to get your second job, when the time comes to move on. Your college degree has given you knowledge of specific subjects without experience to put it all in context. Your first job will give you training and skills that will help you apply what you’ve learned, so you can take a major step up soon!
So, with that in mind, let’s begin the job search process. Don’t worry though. It's normal to be a little overwhelmed by the thought of looking for a job, especially if you don't know how the process works.
The Real World 101 Finding Your First Job After College Guide will make it all much easier. It will reduce all the decisions you have to make and actions you have to take into easy steps. This guide is small and short enough for you to keep with you and refer to whenever you feel lost or don’t know the next step to take.
